Dr. Robin Simpson’s Retirement as Registrar
As Board Chair, I wish to announce that Dr. Robin Simpson will be retiring as Registrar of the College effective June 1, 2019. On behalf of the Board, I wish to express our immense gratitude and appreciation to Robin for his hard work and dedication as the College Registrar over the last 8½ years.
Robin graduated from the University of Waterloo School of Optometry and began his practice as an optometrist in British Columbia in 1983. He remained in private practice for 28 years. Robin was elected to the College Board in 2010 and stepped in as Interim Registrar the following year. Fortunately for the College, Robin accepted a permanent appointment as the Registrar six months later.
Robin has expertly guided the College through many regulatory reforms and changes to optometric regulation during his tenure as Registrar. He has established and maintained strong collaborative relationships with registrants, other health regulators, Ministry of Health staff, and stakeholders. He has worked tirelessly to ensure that the regulatory framework for optometrists in British Columbia is administered in a fair, transparent and accountable manner. He has been responsible for many important projects as Registrar, including the adoption of the new Standards of Practice, a document which will provide a solid foundation for enhancing optometric practice and focusing professional development on patient-centered care.
Robin’s work at the College has garnered him deep respect for his insightful, practical and principled approach to regulation and unwavering commitment to the College’s public interest mandate. Robin’s gracious leadership and presence at the College will be deeply missed by the Board members, College staff, and the many registrants and other professionals who have had the privilege to work with him.
As a result of Robin’s hard work and vision, the College is well-positioned to face the challenges of regulatory reform and to ensure that the public will continue to receive a high standard of optometric care. We wish Robin the very best in his future adventures.
